Washington State Safe Patient Handling Law

Applying the Appropriate Engineered Solution

During the past five years, there has been more equipment available to eliminate patient lifting in hospitals. The problem is sifting through all that is available to find what is best. Once in the facility, there's the problem of remembering what problem the equipment was supposed to resolve.

A structured approach to eliminating lifting and thereby reducing loss time accidents, limited duty assignments, and plain aggravation is to first assess the safety situation in the hospital. This entails investigating where accidents happen and why, assigning a "Worst First" approach to solve the problem causing the most harm. Only at that point is it appropriate to look at solutions, both mechanical and procedural.

TSK Products will perform the assessments required by a hospital looking to improve its safety or get ready handle a changing population. We have been busy responding to facilites trying to understand the steps required to safely handle bariatric patients. At the conclusion of the assessment report, there are procedural and mechanical solutions presented. Implimenting solutions are done in consideration with the facility's culture, procurement capability, and commitment.
